Where to Stay in Madeira

The vibrant capital of Madeira combining historical charm with modern amenities. Old Town (Zona Velha) features cobblestone streets adorned with street art, traditional restaurants, and lively bars. The city center offers excellent infrastructure including the main hospital, shopping, coworking spaces, and direct access to the famous cable car to Monte. Steep hills can be challenging, but public buses and taxis are readily available. Most digital nomads base themselves here for convenience and social opportunities.

Just 30 minutes from Funchal, it offers the perfect balance between remote work tranquility and access to city conveniences when needed.

Madeira's second city and one of only two places on the island with a man-made sandy beach (imported Moroccan sand). Located on the eastern coast just 20 minutes from the airport, Machico offers a more authentic Portuguese experience with lower prices than Funchal. The town has a growing digital nomad community, a pleasant boulevard with marina views, and excellent access to hiking trails including the stunning Ponta de São Lourenço peninsula. Perfect base for surfers with consistent waves at Porto da Cruz nearby.

The expat favorite on Madeira's southwest coast, known for having the island's only natural-looking sandy beach (also imported sand) and consistently good weather. Calheta attracts wealthy foreigners and retirees with its peaceful atmosphere, stunning ocean views, and proximity to Paul da Serra plateau for hiking. The area has excellent restaurants, a marina, and a rum distillery. While quieter than Funchal, it offers a higher-end lifestyle experience about 35 minutes from the capital.
