🏘️ Best Neighborhoods
Where to stay in Colombo
Kollupitiya (Colombo 03)
Kollupitiya is one of the most practical and central areas for digital nomads, stretching between the ocean front and the main business streets of Colombo. You are surrounded by malls, supermarkets, international hotels and mid range apartment buildings, so daily errands rarely take more than a few minutes. Traffic on Galle Road and the parallel streets can be intense and noisy, but in exchange you get extremely easy access to tuk tuks, buses and ride hailing for moving around the city. Several coworking spaces, cafes with WiFi and chain coffee shops are either within walking distance or a very short ride, which makes this area a good default choice if you are staying in Colombo for the first time and want everything to be simple.
Bambalapitiya (Colombo 04)
Bambalapitiya sits immediately south of Kollupitiya and feels like a softer, more residential continuation of the central strip. You still have Galle Road running through the neighbourhood, with plenty of buses and tuk tuks, but side streets tend to be a little quieter and lined with low to mid rise apartment buildings, schools and local shops. The ocean and the railway line are never far away, which gives the area a slightly more laid back vibe compared to the corporate towers further north. Rents here can be a bit more reasonable for the same floor space, and many remote workers choose it as a medium term base where they can sleep more quietly but still reach coworking spaces, malls and restaurants in less than fifteen minutes.
Cinnamon Gardens (Colombo 07)
Cinnamon Gardens is the green and elegant heart of Colombo, full of tree lined avenues, embassies, historic villas and a few modern apartment blocks hidden behind high walls. The pace here is slower than along the coast, and you notice more joggers, dog walkers and families using the nearby parks and the National Museum grounds. Streets are generally calmer and more pleasant to walk, with far less honking than on Galle Road, and there is a growing selection of design focused cafes, brunch spots and small restaurants that cater to both expats and well off locals. Rents and house prices are higher than the city average, but in return you get better perceived safety, more greenery, less noise at night and an atmosphere that many long term nomads and remote professionals find easier to live in for several months at a time.
Dehiwala / Mount Lavinia
Dehiwala and Mount Lavinia form a continuous coastal strip south of central Colombo where the city starts to feel more like a relaxed beach suburb. Parallel to the railway line you find a mix of older houses, small guesthouses and mid range hotels, many of them within a short walk of the sand. The beach itself is urban rather than pristine, but sunsets are often spectacular and there are several casual bars and restaurants where you can sit with your laptop for a while or simply unwind after work. Commuting into the centre takes longer, either by train along the coast or by road in heavy traffic, so this area works best for nomads with flexible hours who do not need to be in a coworking space at nine in the morning every day. In exchange you get more space for your money, easier access to the sea and a slower daily rhythm that many long term travellers appreciate.

Best things to do in Colombo
Galle Face Green
Long seafront promenade where families, couples and street food vendors gather in the evening. Classic spot for a sunset walk with views of the ocean and the new skyline.
Gangaramaya Temple
One of the most important Buddhist temples in the city, located next to Beira Lake. A dense complex with statues, courtyards and a small museum that shows urban Sri Lankan Buddhism up close.
National Museum of Sri Lanka
Large museum housed in a white colonial era building in Cinnamon Gardens. It holds archaeological finds, statues, masks and objects from different periods of Sri Lankan history.
Pettah Market
Crowded and noisy traditional market with spices, textiles, electronics, tropical fruit and street food. A chaotic maze that shows everyday commercial Colombo.
Colombo Lotus Tower
Iconic tower shaped like a lotus flower, now a symbol of the city skyline. The observation deck offers 360 degree views over Colombo, the port and the ocean.
Viharamahadevi Park
Large central park opposite the town hall, with big trees, sculptures and plenty of shade. One of the few true green lungs in the middle of Colombo.
Independence Square
Wide square with the Independence Memorial Hall and manicured gardens. Important place for modern Sri Lankan history and now a favourite spot for runners and families.
Old Dutch Hospital and Colombo Fort
Restored historic complex in the Fort district with restaurants, bars and shops around charming courtyards. Good starting point to explore colonial era streets and the contrast with the new high rises.

💬 What Nomads Say
Real reviews from digital nomads
"I used Colombo as a base for three months while working fully remote for a European company and it worked very well. Spaces like Hatch and Likuid had stable internet and plenty of other nomads to meet. Costs were clearly lower than in Bangkok or Singapore and on weekends it was easy to escape to the south coast for surf and postcard beaches."
"I stayed in Colombo for about a month and a half. The big plus for me was the mix of city life and the ability to travel quickly around the island. Heat, humidity and traffic can be draining, but using Uber and PickMe I felt reasonably safe moving around. For work I alternated between coworking spaces and cafes in Colombo 03 and 07 where it is easier to find calm and nicely designed spaces."
"Colombo is not my favourite city in Asia but it does make sense as a base. Rents have gone up compared to a few years ago and for decent standards you need areas like Cinnamon Gardens or good condos in Colombo 03 and 04. Internet is solid in coworking spaces and a bit less reliable in apartments. If you want a super walkable city with intense nightlife this is not it, but as a gateway to the rest of Sri Lanka it works fine."
