The surf in the mornings before opening my laptop was the best routine I've ever had. The food scene is incredible, especially the fresh seafood. Safety-wise, I never felt uncomfortable, even walking home late at night. The only downside is you really need some Portuguese to get around, but locals are patient and friendly. The biggest challenge was transportation; you really need a car or be comfortable with Uber to get around the island efficiently. The digital nomad community is smaller than places like Lisbon or Bali, but I made great connections at coworking events. If you're looking for a beautiful, safe, and affordable base in South America, Floripa delivers."
"My two months in Florianópolis had its ups and downs. The natural beauty is undeniable - the beaches and hiking trails are world-class. However, I found the internet speeds inconsistent, especially in Barra da Lagoa where I first stayed. Moving to Lagoa improved things significantly. The lack of English speakers was challenging at times, and getting around without a car was frustrating. Public buses exist but are slow and confusing to navigate. I also visited during January which was a mistake - extremely crowded, prices doubled, and beach parking was a nightmare. The shoulder season (April-May or October-November) seems ideal. Despite these issues, the affordable cost of living and friendly locals made it worthwhile. Just come prepared and manage your expectations about infrastructure."
