Advantages

  • Low cost of living compared with Western cities while offering a major financial and media hub
  • Strong internet options in most mid- to upper-tier neighbourhoods with 50–100 Mbps fibre common
  • Vast local market and networking potential in tech, finance, media and creative industries
  • Incredible street food, South and North Indian cuisines, plus vibrant nightlife in pockets of Bandra and Lower Parel
  • Year-round warm weather with excellent conditions in December–February
  • Strong rail, metro and rideshare networks once you learn how to use them

Disadvantages

  • Very dense, noisy and chaotic city that can feel overwhelming for first-time visitors
  • Heavy monsoon rains from June to September can flood streets and disrupt commutes
  • Air pollution is a regular issue, especially in winter and near major roads
  • Traffic is intense and cross-town journeys can be slow even for short distances
  • Limited green space and beaches that are more for promenading than swimming
  • Inequality is very visible and can be emotionally challenging to adjust to

💬 What Nomads Say

Real reviews from digital nomads

Elena S.
UX Designer • 1 months
⭐⭐⭐⭐

"Mumbai was my first deep experience of India and it was intense but rewarding. I stayed in Bandra West for six weeks, working partly from home and partly from a coworking space in BKC. Internet was surprisingly solid at 80–100 Mbps most of the time, and my total monthly spend was around $1,400 including a nice studio, Ubers and eating out several times a week. The hardest parts were the noise, traffic and the monsoon showers, but the food and energy more than made up for it."

⭐⭐⭐

"As someone who grew up in a smaller Indian city, living and working remotely in Mumbai was a mixed bag. On the plus side, there are endless opportunities, events and people to meet, and coworking spaces in Andheri and Powai are excellent. On the minus side, commuting can eat a lot of time, pollution bothers me in winter and it's hard to find real quiet without paying a premium. It's a great place to be for a while, but I wouldn't call it a chill nomad base."

⭐⭐⭐⭐

"I used Mumbai as a filming and writing base for a month while covering India. The city is visually overwhelming in the best way – trains, markets, colonial architecture, street food, everything. I found it easier to work productively from Powai and then schedule specific shoot days in South Mumbai, rather than living in the middle of the chaos. Definitely not for everyone, but if you thrive on big-city intensity it's an exciting, cheap base."
