βœ“Advantages

  • βœ“Officially English-speaking country, making everyday life and bureaucracy easier
  • βœ“High safety levels and low violent crime compared to many European capitals
  • βœ“Historic UNESCO-listed capital full of baroque architecture and sea views
  • βœ“Fast and reliable internet with strong fixed broadband and 5G mobile coverage
  • βœ“Growing coworking ecosystem with premium spaces in historic townhouses
  • βœ“Year-round mild climate with many sunny days even in winter
  • βœ“Compact, walkable city centre where you can reach most places on foot
  • βœ“Easy access to ferries and buses for exploring Sliema, Three Cities and the rest of Malta
  • βœ“Good healthcare system with modern hospitals and English-speaking doctors
  • βœ“Progressive stance on LGBTQ+ rights for such a small, traditional country

βœ—Disadvantages

  • βœ—Cost of living and especially rents in Valletta, Sliema and St Julian's are high for the region
  • βœ—Very small city – nightlife and restaurant scene can feel limited if you stay many months
  • βœ—Tourist crowds and cruise ships in high season make the centre feel busy and commercial
  • βœ—Housing stock can be older with varying levels of insulation and natural light
  • βœ—Public transport relies on buses that can be slow and crowded at peak times
  • βœ—Summer heat and strong sun in July and August can be intense for walking and working in the middle of the day
  • βœ—Limited green space inside Valletta itself; you may rely on promenades and short trips for nature
  • βœ—Island effect – it is easy to get island fever if you stay long without occasional trips
  • βœ—Not ideal for serious surfing; beaches and swimming are better than waves
  • βœ—Job market on the island is relatively small if you ever want to pivot from remote work to local work

⭐⭐⭐⭐⭐

"Valletta is one of my favourite bases in Europe. I spent two months there working UK hours from Grand Central and some cafΓ©s in the old town. Everything is walkable, the views are ridiculous and I always felt safe walking home at night. Internet in my Sliema flat was around 250 Mbps and mobile data on Epic never gave me issues. It is not cheap, but compared to London or Zurich it felt reasonable for the lifestyle."

⭐⭐⭐⭐

"I used Valletta as a winter base for three months and really enjoyed the mild weather and sunshine. I worked mostly from home in Floriana plus a coworking pass at Business Labs. The island is small, so on weekends I could explore different bays and villages without long travel times. Downsides: rent in central areas is high, and the bus network can be slow at rush hour. Nightlife is limited in Valletta itself, so I went to St Julian's when I wanted more action."

⭐⭐⭐

"Valletta is stunning but it felt a bit small after a while. After six weeks I felt like I knew every street and cafΓ©. It is a great place to focus on deep work and enjoy views, but if you rely on a big social scene you might prefer a larger city. Also, prices in Valletta and Sliema surprised me – more like Western Europe than a cheap island. Still, I would happily come back for a focused month in spring or autumn."
