India

Asia

India offers a diverse and affordable destination for digital nomads with rich culture, growing tech hubs, and extensive e-visa options. While there is no dedicated digital nomad visa, the e-Tourist visa allows stays up to 90-180 days per visit with multiple entry options for 1 or 5 years. Popular destinations include Goa for beach vibes, Bangalore for tech community, and Rishikesh for wellness. Remote work on tourist visas operates in a gray area, while the business e-visa is more suitable for legitimate remote work activities.

The 1-year multiple-entry format allows repeated 90-day stays but does not change the work prohibition.

US, UK, Canada, Japan nationals can stay up to 180 days per visit
Other nationalities can stay up to 90 days per visit

🛡️ Tax Implications

If cumulative stays exceed 182 days in a financial year (Apr 1 - Mar 31), you become a tax resident and worldwide income may be taxable. With 90-day max stays and multiple entries, crossing 182 days is possible. Track days carefully. RNOR (Resident Not Ordinarily Resident) status may apply in initial years, limiting taxation to India-sourced income only.

💡 Pro Tips

  • Apply 4 to 120 days before planned first arrival
  • Great for digital nomads with flexible travel plans
  • Can combine with trips to Nepal, Sri Lanka for visa runs
  • Keep track of total days spent per calendar year (max 180) to avoid overstaying
  • Consider business e-visa if your activities involve any work

⚠️Remote Work: Grey Area

The e-Business visa is the closest legal option for remote workers in India. Legal analysis indicates holders of a valid Indian business visa may work remotely for a foreign company from India. However, the visa is officially intended for business meetings, trade, purchasing, and attending conferences — not full-time remote employment. Cannot accept salaried jobs or derive income from Indian sources. Freelancers serving Indian clients should use an Employment visa instead.

Key Benefits

More appropriate for remote work than tourist visa
Covers business meetings, conferences, trade activities
Multiple entry for 1 year
Up to 180 days continuous stay
Can conduct business-related activities legally

🛡️ Tax Implications

Stays exceeding 182 days in a financial year (Apr-Mar) trigger tax residency with worldwide income taxable. With 180-day max stay per entry, crossing the threshold is possible within a single visit. Business activities may create Permanent Establishment risk for the foreign employer if the worker participates in key decisions or serves Indian clients from India. Non-residents taxed only on India-sourced income.

💡 Pro Tips

  • Better option for digital nomads than tourist visa
  • Apply up to 120 days before planned arrival

🚫 Remote Work: Not Permitted

Working remotely on a tourist visa is illegal under India's Foreigners Act. Section 14(b) prohibits any form of employment on a tourist visa, with penalties including fines, deportation, and imprisonment up to 5 years. Many digital nomads do work on tourist visas in practice, but this is technically a violation.

🛡️ Tax Implications

Stays under 182 days in a financial year (Apr-Mar): non-resident status, only India-sourced income taxable. Tourist visa max stay is 30 days so tax residency is unlikely. No registration required for stays under 180 days.

💡 Tips

  • Apply at least 4 days before planned arrival (up to 120 days in advance since Dec 2025)
  • Take advantage of April-June reduced pricing if possible
  • Ensure your photo meets exact specifications — AI verification now rejects selfies and low-quality images
  • Keep printed copy of ETA even if you have digital version
  • Biometrics will be captured upon arrival at immigration

Frequently Asked Questions

Does India have a dedicated digital nomad visa?
As of 2025, India does not have a specific digital nomad visa. Goa state has been advocating for one but it has not been implemented. Digital nomads typically use the e-Tourist Visa (1 or 5 years) or e-Business Visa. The e-Business Visa is more appropriate if your activities involve any business-related work, as remote work on a tourist visa is technically not permitted though enforcement is minimal.
Can I work remotely for a foreign company while on a tourist visa in India?
Technically, remote work is not permitted on a tourist visa. However, enforcement is minimal for those working remotely for foreign clients without earning income in India. The e-Business Visa is a more appropriate choice if you want to be on safer legal ground, as it covers business-related activities. Many digital nomads use the 1-year or 5-year e-Tourist Visa and work discreetly from coworking spaces in Goa, Bangalore, and other hubs.
What happens if I overstay my visa in India?
Overstaying is taken seriously in India. Consequences include fines, detention, and requirement to obtain an Exit Permit from the Ministry of Home Affairs through the FRRO. Processing an exit permit can take up to 90 days. Overstayers may face difficulty obtaining future visas. Always track your days carefully and apply for extensions before your visa expires if needed.
What are the internet speeds like for remote work in India?
India has improved significantly with 5G rollout. Average mobile download speeds are around 56-100 Mbps (varies by location) and fixed broadband averages 60-100 Mbps. Major cities like Bangalore, Mumbai, and Delhi have excellent connectivity. Goa can be inconsistent in some areas. Jio and Airtel are the main providers. Coworking spaces typically offer reliable high-speed internet. Always have a backup mobile hotspot.
How difficult is it for foreigners to open a bank account in India?
Foreign tourists can open NRO (Non-Resident Ordinary) accounts for up to 6 months with valid passport and visa. For longer stays with employment or business visa, resident savings accounts are possible but require additional documentation including FRRO registration and proof of address. Many digital nomads use international options like Wise, Revolut, or Payoneer instead. UPI payment system works with some international cards.
What is the cost of living for digital nomads in India?
India is very affordable. Budget digital nomads can live on USD 400-600/month in smaller cities. A comfortable lifestyle in popular hubs like Goa or Bangalore costs USD 800-1,200/month including accommodation, food, coworking, and transport. Rent for a 1-bedroom in city center ranges from USD 300-500 in Bangalore to USD 500-700 in Goa during peak season. Local food is extremely cheap (USD 2-5 per meal).
What are the tax implications of staying in India as a digital nomad?
You become a tax resident if you stay 182 days or more in a financial year (April-March). Residents are taxed on worldwide income under progressive rates (5-30%). Non-residents are only taxed on India-sourced income. India has Double Tax Avoidance Agreements with 90+ countries. If you earn only from foreign clients and stay under 182 days, you typically have no Indian tax liability. Consult a tax professional for your specific situation.
Is India safe for tourists and digital nomads?
India is generally safe for tourists with normal precautions. The US rates it Level 2 (Exercise Increased Caution). Avoid border areas with Pakistan and the state of Manipur. Petty theft can occur in tourist areas. Solo female travelers should take extra precautions. Major cities and tourist destinations have good infrastructure. Natural disasters like monsoon flooding (June-October) and heatwaves can occur. Always have travel insurance.
What are the best cities in India for digital nomads?
Goa is the most popular for beach lifestyle and growing nomad community (Anjuna, Assagao areas). Bangalore is the tech capital with excellent coworking (Koramangala, Indiranagar). Rishikesh offers spiritual/yoga focus with mountain setting. Dharamshala/McLeod Ganj for Himalayan tranquility. Udaipur for romantic lakeside setting. Pondicherry for French colonial charm. Jaipur for culture and heritage. Each offers different vibes and price points.
Do I need to register with FRRO and how does it work?
Registration with FRRO (Foreigners Regional Registration Office) is mandatory if you stay more than 180 days on certain visa types (Employment, Student, Research, Medical). It must be done within 14 days of arrival. The process is now online through the e-FRRO portal (indianfrro.gov.in) - faceless, cashless, and paperless. You will need passport, visa, photos, and proof of accommodation. Tourist visa holders under 180 days do not need to register.
