Sri Lanka offers an affordable tropical destination for digital nomads with beautiful beaches, rich culture, and growing coworking infrastructure. The ETA system allows stays up to 30 days extendable to 270 days. A Digital Nomad Visa has been announced but not yet implemented. Remote work on tourist visa operates in a gray area with minimal enforcement.
Visa requirements vary by nationality
Electronic Travel Authorization for short-term tourism, valid for 30 days with double entry. The most common visa for visitors to Sri Lanka.
Tourist visa holders must not engage in any form of employment, paid or unpaid. Remote work is not officially permitted on this visa. Sri Lanka has a dedicated Digital Nomad Visa ($500/year, $2,000/month income) for legal remote work.

Process: First extension to 90 days costs USD 60. Apply online at eservices.immigration.gov.lk or visit Department of Immigration in Battaramulla. Second extension to 180 days costs USD 100. Third extension to 270 days costs USD 200.
Renewal: After 270 days total stay, you must leave Sri Lanka. You can obtain a new ETA upon re-entry. No minimum time outside the country required.
Tourist visa holders must not engage in any form of employment. Stays exceeding 183 days in a Sri Lankan tax year (April to March) may trigger tax residency obligations. Non-residents are only taxed on Sri Lankan-sourced income.

One-year renewable visa for remote workers, freelancers, and business owners earning from foreign sources. Launched February 2026. Requires $2,000/month income and $500/year fee. Allows legal remote work, bank account opening, and school enrollment for dependents.

This visa explicitly permits remote work for foreign employers and clients. Cannot work for Sri Lankan companies. Must maintain minimum $2,000/month income from foreign sources. Process: Expected to be renewable annually as long as income requirements are met.
Renewal: Launched February 2026. Renewable annually with proof of tax registration via Inland Revenue Department. Additional $500/month income required per dependent beyond 2. Must provide 2 months written notice to terminate visa.
Holders must comply with all Sri Lankan tax obligations. Tax registration with Inland Revenue Department is mandatory for visa renewal. Foreign-sourced income may be exempt if staying under 183 days in a tax year (April-March), but registration is still required. Stays over 183 days establish tax residency with worldwide income obligations. Local employment is strictly prohibited.

Business ETA permits representing overseas companies, promoting services, attending business meetings, conferences, and trade exhibitions in Sri Lanka. Not for local employment. Representing a foreign employer remotely falls in a grey area.

Short-term visa for travelers passing through Sri Lanka en route to another destination, valid for up to 2 days.
Transit visa is strictly for airport transit within 48 hours. No work of any kind is permitted.
Second extension allowing stay up to 180 days (6 months) total from date of entry. Popular among long-term travelers and digital nomads.

At 270 days, you are a Sri Lankan tax resident. Tax residents are subject to income tax on worldwide income. Progressive rates apply: 6% up to LKR 500,000, then 12%, 18%, 24%, 30%, and 36% on income above LKR 3 million.
Visa for foreign nationals employed by Sri Lankan companies or organizations. Requires employer sponsorship and Entry Visa before travel.
Employment visa is for local employment with a Sri Lankan employer. The visa is tied to the specific employer. Cannot freelance or work remotely for foreign companies on this visa.
Employment visa holders are subject to Sri Lankan income tax on locally-sourced employment income. Tax is typically withheld at source by the employer (PAYE). Presence of 183+ days in a tax year (April-March) establishes full tax residency with worldwide income obligations. Progressive rates: 6% to 36%.
Visa for foreign students pursuing full-time academic studies at recognized educational institutions in Sri Lanka.
Student visa does not authorize any form of employment. Students cannot work part-time or remotely in Sri Lanka.
Students are generally not subject to Sri Lankan income tax as they cannot work. Tax residency rules (183-day threshold) still apply technically but are rarely relevant for students with no income.
