Berawa

One of most beautiful neighborhoods in Canggu, just short distance from bustling Batu Bolong but with completely different vibe. Thankfully not as crowded. Famous for beach clubs, bars, and upscale dining - home to FINNS Beach Club, Atlas Beach Fest, and Cafe Del Mar. Berawa Beach is beautiful for sunset watching and surfing. More polished and Instagram-worthy than Batu Bolong. Growing number of trendy cafes like Nude Cafe, Miel, and Shady Shack attracting remote workers. Perfect balance between action and tranquility. Easy scooter ride to both Batu Bolong and Pererenan. Accommodation includes many stylish villas with pools. Beach clubs scene strongest in all of Canggu.

Pererenan

Best neighborhood to stay in Canggu according to many - has little bit of everything. Located at northwestern edge, this laid-back village offers quieter alternative with thriving surf scene, trendy cafes, stunning rice field views, and natural scenery. Up-and-coming area that is where Canggu was 5 years ago - still authentic but developing fast. Waves here are more advanced which means fewer surfers crowding breaks. Home to Tribal Bali coworking/coliving and excellent work cafes like NOAH. Rents 20-30% lower than Batu Bolong or Berawa. Perfect for families, those seeking peace, and digital nomads wanting to escape the chaos while staying connected. Growing expat community building here for long-term.

Tanah Lot Temple

One of Bali most famous and photographed temples, perched dramatically on a rock formation in the sea about 30 minutes north of Canggu. Built in 16th century and dedicated to Balinese sea gods as one of seven sea temples dotting southwestern Bali coast. Name means 'Land in the Sea' - perfectly describes the stunning offshore setting. At low tide you can walk across to the temple and receive a blessing for small donation (cannot enter as tourist). Sunset views are spectacular when temple becomes beautiful silhouette against golden sky, though expect crowds. Freshwater spring at base believed to have healing properties. Entrance fee 60,000 IDR. Area has become somewhat over-commercialized with tourist traps and sellers, but still worth visiting for the iconic views.

Surfing Lessons

Canggu is one of best places in the world to learn surfing with gentle waves perfect for beginners at Batu Bolong Beach. Dozens of surf schools operate daily with lessons costing around 350k IDR ($22) for 2 hours including board and instructor. Highly recommended schools include Kima Surf (also has yoga and coworking), Tropicsurf, and Surf Well Bali (includes free hotel pickup). Board rental only is much cheaper at 50k IDR for 2 hours if you want to practice on your own. Surf season runs May-September but surfing possible year-round. Berawa Beach is second most popular spot for beginners. Intermediate and advanced surfers should head to Echo Beach for more challenging waves. Group lessons available and often discounted for multiple people.

While Ubud is famous for sprawling rice terraces, Canggu offers its own lush green rice paddies providing peaceful escape from bustling cafes and beach clubs. Free to explore - just wander the paths between fields. Best areas include paths near Pererenan, behind Deus Ex Machina, and around Black Sand Brewery which has great rice field views while you enjoy craft beer. Early morning or late afternoon golden hour provides best light for photography. Many cafes like Amolas offer rice paddy views while you work. 💬 What Nomads Say

Real reviews from digital nomads

⭐⭐⭐⭐⭐

"Bali holds special place in my heart - it is where I traveled after quitting corporate job and going full-time entrepreneur. Here I celebrated my first client, my first 5-figure month, learned to surf, and met my husband! Stayed mostly in Canggu because of the expat scene and found so many coworking spaces conducive to productivity with networking events, phone booths, and the coolest people. BWork is hands down my favorite - their community events and yoga sessions are incredible. The laid-back vibe lets you focus on work and growing your business while living the dream lifestyle. Cost of living is very affordable - can live comfortably on $1,500-2,000/month including nice villa with pool. Scooter rental is cheap ($50-70/month) and essential for getting around. Traffic can be brutal but you learn the shortcuts. The wellness scene is unmatched - yoga, meditation, healthy food everywhere."

⭐⭐⭐⭐

"Canggu was once well-kept secret among surfers but its bohemian charm catapulted it into spotlight among expats, digital nomads, and backpackers seeking trendier alternative to Kuta and Seminyak. Fantastic cafes, restaurants, and beach clubs made it perfect base while in Bali. However be realistic about downsides: traffic is notoriously bad and narrow roads make it unsafe, especially by foot or at night. Pollution (air, noise, trash) is constant concern. Power outages happen. Building quality can be poor with mold issues in cheaper accommodations. WiFi in Airbnbs is hit-or-miss - coworking spaces are more reliable. The area has become polarizing - some love the international vibe, others feel it has lost authenticity. Prices are rising fast. That said, for 2-3 months you will have amazing time - surfing, healthy food, great community, affordable lifestyle. Just manage expectations and do not expect paradise."

⭐⭐⭐

"Been here 2 months and have mixed feelings. Good points: cheap healthy food, nice villas, can surf and work, amazing sunsets, friendly people when you act respectfully. Bad points that nobody warns you about: internet is NOT stable - rented place advertising 40 Mbps but got 5 Mbps most of time. Even coworking spaces are not always reliable and cost $15-18/day. Traffic is INSANE - what looks like 10 minute drive on map takes 45 minutes during rush hour. Construction noise everywhere as area develops rapidly. The scene can feel pretentious with crypto bros and influencers. Also be aware: Canggu is becoming another Kuta with so many tourists even in low season - feels like Ibiza of Asia. If you want authentic Bali, look elsewhere like Ubud or lesser-known areas. For digital nomading I give it C grade due to unreliable internet and noise. As a holiday destination solid B. Make sure to get travel insurance - scooter accidents are common."
