Best things to do in Rotterdam
Markthal
The Markthal is Rotterdam's stunning horseshoe-shaped market hall opened in 2014, featuring the world's largest artwork on its ceiling - the "Horn of Plenty" by artist Arno Coenen. This architectural marvel combines a fresh food market with residential apartments above. Inside you'll find over 100 stalls selling everything from Dutch cheese and stroopwafels to international cuisines. The colorful ceiling depicting giant fruits and vegetables makes it a must-visit landmark.
Cube Houses (Kijk-Kubus)
The iconic Cube Houses designed by architect Piet Blom are Rotterdam's most photographed landmarks. These geometric yellow houses tilted at 45 degrees were built in the 1980s to represent abstract trees forming a forest. You can enter the "Show Cube" museum for €3 to experience what it's like living inside one of these architectural wonders. Some cubes are also part of the StayOkay hostel, offering a unique accommodation experience.
Euromast
Standing at 185 meters, the Euromast is Rotterdam's highest observation tower offering spectacular 360° panoramic views over the city and port. Take the Euroscoop glass-bottom rotating elevator to the very top for an adrenaline rush. The tower features a restaurant at 96 meters and during summer you can zipline or rappel down for an extreme adventure. It's essential to book tickets in advance for this popular attraction.
Erasmus Bridge
The Erasmus Bridge is Rotterdam's iconic cable-stayed bridge shaped like a swan's neck, spanning 802 meters across the Maas River. Nicknamed "The Swan" by locals, this impressive structure connects the north and south parts of the city and is particularly stunning when illuminated at night. The bridge serves as the main connection to Kop van Zuid, the modern waterfront development, and is a symbol of Rotterdam's post-war renewal.
Depot Boijmans Van Beuningen
The Depot is the world's first publicly accessible art storage facility, opened in 2021. This mirrored bowl-shaped building houses 151,000 artworks worth $9 billion from the Museum Boijmans Van Beuningen collection. Visitors can go "backstage" to see how art is stored, restored, and preserved. The rooftop garden offers panoramic views of the city and features a restaurant. The reflective exterior creates stunning photo opportunities.
Fenix Food Factory

💬 What Nomads Say
Real reviews from digital nomads
"Rotterdam exceeded all my expectations as a digital nomad base. The internet is blazing fast - I consistently got 200+ Mbps at my apartment and even faster at coworking spaces like 42workspace. The city's modern architecture is inspiring, and the tech community is incredibly welcoming. English is spoken everywhere, which made settling in effortless. The bike infrastructure is world-class, and I rarely needed public transport. While expensive compared to Asia or Eastern Europe, the quality of life is outstanding. The Markthal and Fenix Food Factory became my regular spots for great food. Highly recommend for tech professionals!"
"I spent three months in Rotterdam and found it to be a solid choice for remote work. The coworking scene is excellent - Progress Bar's community lunches were a highlight, and CIC has everything you could need. The city is very safe; I never felt uncomfortable walking home late at night. However, be prepared for the weather - it's grey and rainy a lot, especially outside summer. The cost of living is high, around €3,000/month for comfortable living including a decent apartment. I loved how easy it is to visit Amsterdam, The Hague, and other cities for day trips. Great for a few months, but the winter weather got to me."
"Rotterdam is a well-organized city with excellent infrastructure, but it might not be the best choice for everyone. The positives: incredibly fast internet, very safe, English widely spoken, and the architecture is genuinely impressive. However, I found the city somewhat business-oriented and lacking the charm of Amsterdam. The nightlife is limited unless you're into the Witte de Withstraat scene. Finding an apartment was challenging due to the housing shortage - I had to settle for something outside my preferred area. At around €1,200 for a basic 1BR, rent is steep. The weather is also a factor; prepare for wind and rain. Good for short stays, but for longer periods I'd consider other European cities with better weather and lower costs."
