Advantages

  • Lower cost of living and rent than most Western European capitals while staying in the EU
  • Very good fixed broadband speeds with strong 5G coverage across Lithuania
  • UNESCO-listed Old Town with baroque streets, churches and viewpoints within walking distance
  • Multiple coworking spaces including Talent Garden and Workland in central locations
  • Growing specialty coffee scene with several laptop-friendly cafés
  • Compact, walkable centre supported by extensive bus and trolleybus network
  • Easy access to nature and lakes, plus popular day trip to Trakai Castle
  • Generally safe city with relatively low violent crime rates
  • Good English level among younger locals and in service/tech sectors
  • Affordable groceries and gyms compared to Nordic and Western European capitals

Disadvantages

  • Long, dark and cold winters with snow and ice can be challenging for mood and mobility
  • Weather is often grey and damp outside the core summer months
  • Smaller international community and fewer meetups than in major nomad hubs
  • Nightlife is lively mainly on weekends and more modest on weekdays
  • Rental market for renovated central apartments can be competitive
  • Some Soviet-era infrastructure and buildings feel dated outside the centre
  • LGBTQ+ acceptance lags behind that of Nordic and Western European capitals
  • International food scene is growing but still limited compared to big EU cities
  • Seasonality: cafés and terraces feel much quieter in the deep winter months
  • Public salaries are lower than Western Europe, which can impact local spending power

💬 What Nomads Say

Real reviews from digital nomads

⭐⭐⭐⭐⭐

"Vilnius was a great surprise. I stayed for two and a half months in spring, renting a one-bedroom in Naujamiestis for under €700 and working from Talent Garden and Rockit. Internet was fast everywhere and I loved being able to walk from my flat to the Old Town in 15 minutes. Trakai is an easy day trip and there are plenty of parks to run in. For the price and quality of life, it is one of my favourite mid-sized capitals."

⭐⭐⭐⭐

"I based myself in Užupis for six weeks, splitting my time between a small studio and working out of cafés like StrangeLove and Taste Map. The creative vibe is real and the Old Town is beautiful, but outside summer you definitely notice how quickly it gets dark. The community of nomads is smaller than in places like Lisbon, yet I still met nice people at coworking events and language exchanges."

⭐⭐⭐

"I spent January and February in Vilnius and, honestly, the winter was tougher than I expected – lots of snow, ice and grey skies. Costs were very reasonable and I always felt safe, but I ended up staying inside coworking spaces and my apartment more than exploring. I would happily come back in late spring or summer, but I would not choose Vilnius again as a deep-winter base."
